Americans Set to Lead Tourist Spending for Greece in 2025, Survey Finds

Α new Visa-Ipsos survey polled 1,500 travelers from the U.S., U.K. and France, asking them about their travel plans and habits for their upcoming trip to Greece this year.

U.S. visitors to Greece plan to spend an average of nearly $3,500 (€3,040) per person (13 percent of their yearly income), while a sizeable 21 percent of U.S. visitors are budgeting exclusive trips and experiences that are worth just over $20,660 (€18,000) per person.

The majority of visitors (90 percent) from the U.S., U.K. and France book their holidays less than one month before their departure, citing the need for flexibility around their personal vacation schedules, while also monitoring prices, and trying to avoid Greek heat waves.

The survey also noted that, apart from the traditional sources of information that travellers have used in the past to make informed decisions about where and when to go, travellers are now also turning to ChatGPT for answers.

For Americans, July is projected as the peak travel month, while preferred destinations include Athens and the Attica region (41 percent), followed by the South Aegean (31 percent) and Crete (27 percent).

Half of respondents from all three countries said that they intend to stay in Greece for 4–7 days, while the other half has planned trips of eight nights or longer in Greece.

Naturally, the most cited reasons for choosing Greece were some much needed beach time (69 percent), and archaeological sites (65 percent).

But American travellers also showed a greater interest than their British and French counterparts in Greek nightlife, theme parks, and live music.

Environmental concerns also influenced American travel decisions, with 30 percent indicating a willingness to pay 5 to 10 percent more for more eco-friendly options in Greece.

The survey also found that Greece will often be part of a multi-destination trip: 50 percent of visitors to Greece also plan to visit Italy, and 40 percent plan to include Spain on their itineraries.
