Greece Builds New Cultural Bridges Through the Faros Global Community

The Study in Greece (SiG) network has launched Faros Global Community to connect Greece’s global diaspora and help share Greek heritage worldwide. The newly unveiled platform maps over 500 Greek language centers, research hubs and study departments across 150 institutions, in more than 40 countries.

The official presentation of Faros Global Community took place at the Hellenic Ministry of Education and was attended by over 300 participants, the vast majority of whom joined from outside of Greece.

During the event, Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Sofia Zacharaki highlighted how the Greek language is a carrier of ideas that have deeply influenced global culture—and that it can also function as an important tool for the internationalization of higher education.

To highlight the current global reach of the Greek language, Zacharakis noted that 40,000 students are currently learning Greek abroad across 230 recognized Greek language departments, supported by 752 seconded educators and 145,000 freshly shipped textbooks.

The Faros presentation also highlighted a companion project, e-ellinomatheia (e-ελληνομάθεια). This digital ecosystem offers online Greek courses, making learning globally accessible and specifically preparing international students to study at Greek universities.

To ensure that these initiatives have robust Greek institutional support, an MoU was signed between SiG and the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The MoU leverages the country’s extensive diplomatic network to connect diaspora communities directly with Greece’s academic institutions, ensuring that initiatives like joint programs and summer schools have the backing of the Greek state.
