Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis presented the “Strategic Plan 2024-2027 for Greeks Abroad” at an event held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new plan aims to strengthen ties with the Greek diaspora and is built around six pillars: digital upgrading of consular services, support for new diaspora networks and structures, collaboration with the diaspora to strengthen Greece’s image, and the promotion of Greek language, history, and culture. The strategic plan also aims to strengthen ties with the younger generation of diaspora Greeks, as well as reinforce connections with Orthodox ecclesiastical institutions.
More than 100 specific actions are included in the plan. These range from establishing a registry of diaspora organizations and creating networking opportunities for Greek academics, scientists, and entrepreneurs worldwide, to supporting Hellenic studies departments, expanding the online Greek language learning platform StaEllinika, and increasing diaspora youth programs.
One of the plan’s key initiatives is a job fair scheduled for December in Düsseldorf, Germany, and co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This event aims to persuade Greek professionals in Germany to return to Greece, and contribute to the country’s economy and society.
During the presentation of the Strategic Plan, Minister Gerapetritis highlighted the strength of Greece’s diaspora by noting that, of the world’s cities with over 100,000 Greek residents, seven are situated outside of the country’s borders. This global presence, emphasized Gerapetritis, is “our great strength.”
