Jackie Onassis Skorpios Wedding Dress Sells for $25k at Auction

The wedding dress worn by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy in 1968 when she wed Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis and she became Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis aka Jackie O was sold at auction for $24,320, according to the auction house website.

The dress, from designer Valentino’s 1968 couture collection, was estimated to reach between $8000-$12,000.

The former First Lady wore it at her Greek Orthodox ceremony on Onassis’ private island of Scorpios when the couple wed on October 20, 1968.

Although the winner of the auction has not been disclosed, there was speculation that Kim Kardashian was bidding on the dress. The reality TV star had snatched a vintage Cartier watch owned by Onassis at a previous auction for almost $380,000.

“Jackie’s wedding dress was groundbreaking for the time, being an unconventional short dress,” Marissa Speer, head of sale for designer handbags and fashion at Bonhams in the US, said in a Vogue interview.

“The dress is a stepping stone in her transition from the Queen of Camelot to Jackie O: style icon, where she was making her own choices and showing her independence through her style.”
