One of Canada’s leading 24-hour TV stations has announced a forthcoming production featuring two widely-known Greek-Canadian media personalities.
“Watching the Detectives” is a modern crime caper show featuring critically-acclaimed comedian Angelo Tsarouchas as a Greek gangster priest.
Created by George Stroumboulopoulos and Bob Mackowycz, the show tells the story of video jockeys and musicians who try to stop a gang war in Toronto.
“Watching The Detectives is a gritty and imaginative modern take on the classic crime story,” Stromboulopoulos said. “This is a story that showcases the neighborhoods and people you rarely see represented. Some of this is fact, some of this is fiction but it’s all wild.”
Stromboulopoulos called called the show a “love letter” to genres including film noir, hip hop, 1980’s action comedies, street culture and the “strange characters who lurk after the sun goes down.”
The action revolves around four streetwise friends — Stroumboulopoulos, real-life musicians Michie Mee (Canadian rap pioneer) and Ian Campeau (aka DJ NDN of A Tribe Called Red Fame) and Tsarouchas (Father Nikos Petros).
With a history of protecting at-risk youth, all four friends must save a child under their care after he accidentally steals precious underworld secrets from Toronto’s most dangerous gang leader. Having this info puts the child in grave danger and he goes into hiding. The detectives have to find him fast, or he dies.
The series unfolds with each new revelation opening up another mystery. Before long, The detectives find themselves in mortal danger. They fight their way through angry gangs seeking revenge, rival assassins hired to find the kid and a criminal organization that seemingly knows their every move. The show grows increasingly surreal as the Toronto underground reveals a deep secret — known to only a few.
Stroumboulopoulos said the team spent weeks in his house “armed with laptops, boundless energy and mountains of vegan pizza” to build “Watching the Detectives” from scratch. The Canadian TV star is best known as former host of CBC Television talk show George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight (2005-2014) and as a former video jockey for the Canadian music television channel MuchMusic.
Τsarouchas has appeared on hit TV shows such as “Mad Men,” “Sullivan and Son” and “Blue Mountain State.” He headlines worldwide and has toured with Vince Vaughn’s “Wild West Comedy Show.” Most recently, the Los Angeles-based comedian finished filming his latest one-hour comedy special to a sold-out audience in Athens, Greece.
