A new production of Sophocles’ Elektra is set to open in London’s West End, presenting a modern interpretation of the ancient Greek tragedy in one of the world’s most renowned theater districts. The play will run for 11 weeks at the Duke of York’s Theatre, beginning January 24, 2025, with preview performances scheduled at the Theatre Royal Brighton from January 13–18.
This production of Elektra aims to bring Sophocles’ classic tragedy to contemporary audiences while remaining true to its core themes.
The story follows Elektra as she pursues justice for the murder of her father, King Agamemnon. Upon the return of her brother Orestes from the safety of exile in Phocis, the siblings join forces to confront their mother, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus, for their roles in their father’s death.
Academy Award-winning actress and filmmaker Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Room) stars in the title role. The play is based on the contemporary translation of Elektra by poet and scholar Anne Carson, known for her translations of ancient Greek works, and is directed by Daniel Fish, acclaimed for his revival of Oklahoma!
