With so many celebrity passings this year, the mere thought of losing Betty White as well, was too much for Demetrios Hrysikos to handle.
He set up a Go Fund Me account to protect his beloved White from the Grim Reaper.
Of course, it all started as a joke— but the post has since gone viral with news organizations as far away as Australia picking up the story.
He jokes that he never asked Betty White if she wanted his protection.
“If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1 , 2017. Now , assuming she doesn’t want a strange Greek standing guard outside her door all monies will be donated to the Spartanburg little theater to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry mantle of the legends that have left is this year.”
People have warmed up to the protection strategy. To date, the Go Fund Me campaign has more than doubled its $2000 goal.
Of course, Hrysikos never really intended to fly to wherever the quarter-Greek Golden Girls star resides and protect her.
He states on the fundraising page that he merely wanted to put some smiles on faces of his family and friends after so much bad news in 2016, citing the deaths of Carrie Fisher and David Bowie, to name a few.
The money, he noted on the Go Fund Me page, would support a small local theater in his hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
