It was the largest State Funeral in the history of the United States with millions of shocked, mourning Americans watching from their homes, as well as hundreds of dignitaries from practically every nation on the planet sending a representative.
According to the Kennedy Library, the funeral attracted 220 foreign dignitaries from 92 foreign nations, including 19 heads of state and government.
On the day of the funeral, the widowed First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy received official national representatives in the Red Room of The White House.
Representing Greece was Queen Frederica and Greece’s Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sofoklis Venizelos.
At the time of the funeral, media were fixated on the fact that the Greek Queen, a towering figure in European Royalty and well-known in the United States, warmly embraced the American First Lady and offered her comfort beyond protocol.
