Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the seminfals of the Australian Open for the third time in his career after defeating Jannik Sinner on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old Tsitsipas defeated his 20-year-old Italian counterpart and will play against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev next.
“I think my humility helped a lot today,” Tsitsipas said during a postgame on-court interview. “I knew I was going on the court facing a very good player so I stayed in tact. I tried to focus on my best shots and it paid off more than I thought.”
The Athens native had elbow surgery during the off-season and surprised fans by participating in this year’s tournament after his doctor said he would not recover in time.
“[My doctor] certainly told me I don’t see you playing in Australia,” Tsitsipas said. “I proved him wrong!”
Tsitsipas will face off against the second-seeded Medvedev on Thursday. Click here for information on how to watch.
