U.S., Canadian Runners Wanted for 2025 Athens Marathon Charity Team

The New York City-based Greek America Foundation is inviting U.S. and Canadian runners to join Team Greek America for the 2025 Athens Marathon.

Participants will not only take part in one of the world’s most historic sporting events but also help raise funds to support Project Hope for Greece – an initiative of the Greek America Foundation that aids Greek charities in their important work to help the country’s most vulnerable populations.

The Athens Marathon is inspired by the legendary final run of Athenian herald Pheidippides in 490 B.C. to deliver news of the Greek victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. This iconic route was revived during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, where Greek athlete Spyros Louis gained global recognition by winning the race.

How to Participate

Participants can train from any location throughout North America with the support of Team Greek America captain and 2023 Athens Marathon finisher Manos Zervakis.

Zervakis will provide regular email updates and training tips, as well as schedule monthly Zoom meetings where team members can connect, track their progress, and prepare for the marathon.

Requirements for Team Members

Team members will train independently with virtual support provided by Zervakis. Participants must also attend team-building Zoom meetings scheduled throughout the year and leading up to the Athens 2025 Marathon.

Additionally, each participant is required to raise or donate a minimum of $1,500 to support the Foundation’s charitable initiatives. They are also responsible for covering their own travel expenses to and from Athens, as well as any other incidental costs.

What Team Greek America Provides

Team Greek America captain Zervakis will offer personal communication support throughout the training process. Each participant will also receive a personalized fundraising page to share with family and friends, helping to generate support for their efforts.

During the race weekend, team members will be provided with four nights of accommodation in shared apartments, each with a private bedroom, and two group meals.
