A beach restaurant in Greece has become an internet sensation with videos flooding the social media networks— every time the wind blows.
Barbouni, a beach restaurant at the Costa Navarino Resort in Messinia, Greece features one of the most interesting ceilings in the world.
Designed by architecture firm K-Studio, the restaurant opened in 2011 and sits on a wooden platform elevated from the sand allowing the waves to break underneath it.
The structure of the building is formed by a grid of natural wooden columns that blend harmoniously with the color of the sand.
Directly overhead the main seating area is a series of rows of hanging fabric sheets that sway soothingly in the ebbs and flows of the wind, allowing air to circulate and the space to stay cool.
Rays of sunlight peek through the sheets, bringing light and shade simultaneously inside the space.
The ceiling— almost always in motion— resembles the waves on the beach and offers a rhythm to the restaurant, transforming it into a living, “breathing” organism with the wind acting as its mechanism for life.
Just watch when happens when a strong gust of wind passes through.
