Critically-Acclaimed Film “Smyrna” Premiering Nationwide in USA December 8

“Smyrna,” the award-winning Greek film based on one of the 20th century’s greatest humanitarian disasters, will have a one-night only nationwide premiere in 700 theaters across the United States on Thursday, December 8.

One century after the September 1922 Smyrna Catastrophe, the events come to life in this critically acclaimed war drama about an elderly Greek American woman whose family diary recounts the cosmopolitan city where Greeks, Turks, Jews, Armenians and Levantines once lived together harmoniously.

The film recounts the historical incidents and facts that preceded and occurred during the occupation of Smyrna in 1922 by the Turkish army, including the massacre of the local Greek and Armenian population. The story follows the lives of the Baltatzis family.

The one-night screening includes a special bonus feature with behind-the-scenes footage including exclusive talent interviews. The footage also included a live recorded performance of select songs from the original “Smyrna” soundtrack with world famous singer Alkistis Protopsalti and other artists.

Written by Mimi Denissi in collaboration with two-time Tony Award nominee Martin Sherman, “Smyrna” stands as the highest budgeted Greek film in history, to date. The film is directed by Grigoris Karantinakis with an international cast including Mimi Denissi, Leonidas Kakouris, Burak Hakki, Katerina Geronikolou, Jane Lapotaire, Susan Hampshire, Rupert Graves, Christos Stergioglou and Daphne Alexander.

Two-time Academy Award Nominated Director Atom Egoyan calls the film “An urgent and multilayered examination of an unspeakable atrocity, told with great passion and brimming with outrage.”

The film is produced by Tanweer Productions with Dionyssis Samiotis serving as producer alongside executive producers Joseph Samaan and Mimi Denissi.

U.S. promotional partners for the film include Antenna 1 Satellite (ANT1), the Order of AHEPA and Papadopoulou.
