Two Weeks Before Her Concert, Anna Vissi Breaks Attendance Records at Athens Marble Stadium

It’s the most famous stadium in the world, built by the ancient Greeks as a racecourse and stadium for athletic ceremonies more than 2,500 years ago. It was renovated for the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens and still stands today as the only stadium in the world made exclusively of marble. And not just regular marble, but… beautiful marble. Thus its informal name Kalimarmaro.

In addition to hosting various international sports events over the past century, It’s been used as a music venue for Greek and foreign artists alike.

The Scorpions called their concert on July 16, 2006 as their “once in a lifetime concert.” Depeche Mode, Culture Club, The Clash, Joan Jett— even Italian tenor Placid Domingo have performed in this unique space.

On July 1, 2009, Greek pop star Sakis Rouvas performed with an audience of 50,000. It was the largest attendance ever at the stadium for a non-sporting event, and the largest attendance for a single musical artist in Greek history.

It would take fourteen years for that record to be broken, when on June 14, 2023 Greek rocker Vasilis Papaconstantinou held a solo concert marking the 50 years of his own musical career. Just over 52,000 people attended the concert, breaking the previous record by Rouvas for biggest musical event in Greece by a single artist.

And a little over a year later, on October 5, 2024, the record will be broken again for the biggest musical event by a single act at the Stadium and one of the largest musical events in Greek History.

As of September 21st, two weeks before the concert. more than 55,000 tickets had already been sold for Anna Vissi’s concert.

Vissi, known in Greece as “the absolute” or η απόλυτη is no stranger to selling out arenas and stadiums. Her October 5th concert will be the finale of a sold-out stadium tour throughout Greece and Cyprus during the summer of 2024.
